Halloween is creeping up on us! Are you teaching remotely and wondering how you can incorporate some Halloween fun? Don’t Worry! I’ve got you covered! I’m going to share a few spooky activities to use with your primary students.
CREEPY STORIES
Kids love to listen to Halloween stories! I asked my students to help pick a few of our favorites to share with you. Here are a few fun Halloween videos that are FA-BOO-LOUS for any kindergarten, first or second grader.

HALLOWEEN DIRECTED DRAWINGS
I cannot begin to tell you how much my first graders LOVE to do directed drawings! I use them for brain breaks, indoor recess, art projects and writing. The kids love to share their final masterpieces. My all time go to for directed drawings is Art for Kids Hub. There are directed drawings of all kinds! Click below to learn how to draw…

COSTUME CONTEST
My students are always excited to tell me what they will be for Halloween and I love the element of surprise. To keep their costumes under wraps (like a mummy), I have a costume contest. To make it extra special, I come up with some fun categories for a virtual Halloween costume contest and create ribbons or certificates for the winners. Some suggestions are:
- Spookiest Costume
- Prettiest Costume
- Silliest Costume
- Most Colorful Costume
- Cutest Costume
- Most Original Costume
- Most SUPER Superhero Costume
- Grossest Costume
- Most Realistic Costume
THE DANCING WORMS EXPERIMENT
This is fun for any mad scientist on Halloween! This science experiment uses baking soda and vinegar to make gummy worms dance!
You will need a few common household items:
- Gummy Worms
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
- Cutting Board
- Sharp Knife
- 2 clear cups
- Cut the gummy worms in quarters.
- Measure 3 tablespoons of baking soda and stir them into a glass filled with 1 cup of warm water.
- Mix 10-12 pieces of gummy worm into the baking soda and water concoction.
- Wait for 15 minutes
- Next, fill the second clear glass with vinegar.
- After 15 minutes, carefully remove the gummy worms from the baking soda and water. Gently place one worm at a time in the vinegar.
Get ready for the OOOOHS and AAAAAHS!
After you add the worms soaked in baking soda, the acetic acid in the vinegar reacts with the bicarbonate in the baking soda, creating carbon dioxide gas bubbles. These gas bubbles form on the gummy worm and as the gas bubbles rise to the surface, they pull the gummy worm up with them, making them wriggle and dance. The worms fall back down as the gas bubbles burst.
I hope your little pumpkins love watching the worms dance as much as mine do!
HALLOWEEN CHARADES
A party isn’t complete without a game and my students have a new favorite! Charades! This can be played in person, or virtually.
For in person fun, simply print out the cards, and have a student come in front of the class to pick a card and act it out. Then, choose 3 people to guess the Halloween character or item. Have students take turns acting out each picture. For a challenge, time students for 3-5 seconds.
To play virtually, I used the grid view to see everyone and I hide myself. I held up one card at a time and all the kids acted it out for me to guess.
And here is a Trick-or-Treat for you! You can get the Halloween Charades game for FREE!
