1. Sneezy the Snowman, by Maureen Wright

Sneezy the Snowman  does not like to be cold.  He tries a variety of things to warm up–but he melts each time!  But the children know just what to do to build him up again and make him feel just right!  This is a silly book that kids will love!

2.  Blizzard,  by John Rocco

Blizzard is definitely one of the best January read alouds!  John Rocco tells a story about his experiences with 40″ of snow when he was ten.  Some aspects of the experience were enjoyable such as having school off and playing in the snow, but there were plenty of challenges too, such as the door being stuck, shoveling the driveway, and not being able to get to the store.

3. The Snow Globe Family, by Jane O’Connor

The Snow Globe Family is written by Jane O’Connor, the author of the Fancy Nancy series.  In this story, the tiny family who lives in the snow globe reminisces about the olden days, when there were HUGE blizzards. They wish the big family would notice the shelved globe and shake it up again. Only the big family’s baby notices them, to the eventual satisfaction of all. After reading this story, my students love to compare and contrast the two families.

4. The Magic of Friendship Snow, by Andi Cann

In The Magic of Friendship Snow, by Andi Cann, a girl named Jojo is having trouble making friends.  Everywhere she looks, she sees people making friends except her. Then Jojo meets Puddles, the snowman made of magic friendship snow.  Your students are not only going to fall in love with Puddles the Snowman, but will also learn from JoJo that to make friends, they need to be brave and try to be a friend.

5. Squirrel’s New Year’s Resolution, by Pat Miller

I read Squirrel’s New Year’s Resolution every January to teach my first graders about resolutions. In this book, Squirrel hears about making New Year’s resolutions on the radio, but she doesn’t know what they are. So she visits her friends to find out what they resolve to do in the new year. Bear wants to help others learn to read. Porcupine decides to be less grumpy. What will Squirrel choose to do for her resolution?

6. I am Martin Luther King, Jr., by Brad Meltzer

I am Martin Luther King, Jr is a great book that tells the story of Martin Luther King Jr. This book is part of the Ordinary People Change the World series, which my first graders love! The characters in the series are very relatable to young readers.

7. The Snowy Day, by Ezra Jack Keats

No “Must Have January Read Aloud” list is complete without The Snowy Day.   This is my all-time favorite and I still have my original copy from when I was a child.   This story tells the simple tale of Peter, who wakes up to discover that snow has fallen during the night.  He has many adventures in the snow.
