When writing a personal narrative, students may feel frustrated, or even confused.&nbsp; It doesn&#8217;t have to be this way!  Using mentor texts for narrative writing is a wonderful way to guide young writers through the writing process.&nbsp; When reading mentor text, students learn about using vivid verbs, onomatopoeia, strong adjectives, and the use of dialogue. It tells a story of a family spending a summer day in Cape Cod. This is perfect for kids who can\u2019t think of anything to write about!&nbsp; It tells the story of a little boy named Ralph, who can\u2019t get past putting his name at the top of his paper.  When it&#8217;s time to write stories, Ralph thinks really hard. He stares at his paper and then at the ceiling. He has no stories!  In the end, Ralph realizes that a great story can be about anything at all. Maybe he really does have some stories to tell!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3jzjqy5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Jabari Jumps<\/a>, by Gaia Cornwall<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3KgkY95\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"263\" height=\"300\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/aplusclassroomcreations.com\/staging\/4523\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/whats-a-personal-narrative.png?resize=263%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1044 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 263px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 263\/300;\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Students can make connections to the theme of this story. &nbsp; Jabari passed his swim test and finished his swimming lessons, so he\u2019s definitely ready to jump off the diving board. Jabari is a very believable character as he faces up to his fears and uncertainties. &nbsp;The dad in the story is supportive but allows Jabari to make choices for himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3jEOI71\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Blizzard<\/a>, by John Rocco<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3fnG33i\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"256\" height=\"295\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/aplusclassroomcreations.com\/staging\/4523\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/writing-personal-narratives.png?resize=256%2C295&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1043 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 256px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 256\/295;\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I think this story is one of my favorite mentor texts for narrative writing!  This story is based on John Rocco\u2019s experience during a blizzard.&nbsp; The book really captures how a blizzard would feel from a child&#8217;s perspective. This is one of my all-time favorite mentor texts for narrative writing!&nbsp; It has a clear beginning, middle, and end; and it captures a small moment in time that kids really relate to.
